Critical Incidents Report for September 2021

In September, TMPA opened 23 case files for critical incidents. Critical incidents are cases in which an officer’s actions, conduct, or omissions resulted in the death or serious bodily injury of a person; or could have resulted in such harm as a result of the officer intentionally discharging his or her firearm. These critical incidents involved members from various agencies throughout the state including: Allen Police Department, Angelina County Sheriff’s Office, Austin Police Department, Baytown Police Department, Fort Worth Police Department, Garland Police Department, Giddings Police Department, Grand Saline Police Department, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Hill County Sheriff’s Department, Hurst Police Department, Lake Worth Police Department, Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, McAllen Police Department, McKinney Police Department, New Braunfels Police Department, Office of Inspector General-HUD, Round Rock Police Department, Seymour Police Department, Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, Walker County Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Falls Police Department, and included the following:

1. Member was involved in an on-duty shooting. Unknown condition of the suspect but no officers were injured.

2. Member was involved in an in-custody death.

3. Member unintentionally discharged duty weapon.

4. Member was involved in a shooting with a suspect who shot at officer but hit a civilian.

5. Member was involved in a shooting. Officers were not hit, but the suspect sustained injuries.

6. Member was involved in an in-custody death.

7. Member was involved in an in-custody death where a suspect who had been arrested and then processed in jail, ingested narcotics and later died.

8. Member was involved in an in-custody death where a suspect died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

9. Member was involved in an on-duty shooting that ended with a fatality.

10. Member was involved in a pursuit that ended in a possible fatality.

11. Member was involved in an on-duty shooting. Member was not injured, and the condition of the suspect is unknown.

12. Member and several other deputies were involved in an on-duty shooting.

13. Members were involved in an on-duty shooting. Members were unharmed but the suspect sustained injuries.

14. Member was involved in a critical incident where a suspect was in custody but jumped through a glass window and is now deceased.

15. Member was involved in an in-custody death.

16. Five other critical incidents involving an on-duty shooting.

17. Three other critical incidents involving a pursuit that ended with a fatality.
