Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne

Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne proudly represents the 24th Congressional District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives, which includes portions of Tarrant, Denton, and Dallas counties. Prior to being elected to Congress, Beth served as Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Mayor of Irving, Irving City Council Member, and a businesswoman. Beth was only the second Republican woman from Texas to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She has called Irving, Texas home for over 30 years.

Crisis Communication/Crisis Leadership - 24 Hours Inside the President’s Bunker on 9/11/01

Lt. Col. Robert Darling, USMC retired

In October 2007, Lieutenant Colonel Darling retired from the United States Marine Corps with just over twenty years of active duty service. He flew attack helicopters in Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the first Gulf War and in Somalia, Africa, in support of Operation Restore Hope. In June 1998, he was selected to fly as a presidential pilot with Marine Helicopter Squadron One and in October 2000, he was handpicked to work for the White House Military Office, Airlift Operations Department. It was in that capacity that Lt. Col. Darling supported the President, Vice President and National Security Advisor in the President's Emergency Operations Center (PEOC) on September 11, 2001. In May 2002, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School where he earned his MBA in Financial Management and subsequently served as a Program Manager for the Chief of Naval Operations supporting the Department of the Navy Flying Hour Program.

As a public speaker on crisis leadership and decision making, Bob has addressed numerous academic, government, and military organizations to include Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and as a guest lecturer on the subject of Crisis Leadership and Counter-terrorism at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Bob is the author of “24 Hours Inside the President’s Bunker, 9/11/01: The White House and the President and CEO of Turning Point Crisis Management-USA, a crisis leadership, decision making, and training company located in Stafford, Virginia.

Ret. Sgt. John MacLellan

Case Study: Gun Battle with Boston Marathon Bombers

Sgt. John MacLellan, Watertown PD retired

Sgt. John MacLellan was the patrol supervisor the fateful night of April 19, 2013. Police chased the Boston Marathon terrorists in Waterdown, Massachusetts where a shootout with the brothers began.

After nearly 30 years of service to the Watertown Police Department, Sgt. MacLellan retired as one of the three most highly decorated police officers in the country for his valor during the shootout. He received the Presidential Medal of Valor, Congressional Badge of Bravery and George Hanna Memorial Award for Bravery from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Jacob Schick, CEO of One Tribe Foundation

Jacob Schick is a third-generation combat Marine, motivational speaker and actor who epitomizes service and sacrifice. Jake helps individuals and teams maximize their potential by using his experience and the effects of being severely wounded in Iraq. His story is one of recovery & resilience and motivates individuals to live well & is a staunch advocate of mental and emotional wellness of the human tribe as a whole.

After a triple-stacked tank mine detonated below his vehicle in the Al Anbar Province, Iraq in 2004, Jake suffered compound fractures in his left leg and left arm; multiple skin, ligament and bone losses; varying burns; partial loss of his left hand and arm; amputation below the knee of his right leg, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Jake has undergone over 50 operations, 23 blood transfusions, and countless hours of rehabilitation. He will tell you his physical injuries weren’t the worst that happened to him. For years, he dreaded his TBI and PTSD diagnosis; common mindset amongst warriors and people alike.

Jake is currently the CEO of One Tribe Foundation (22KILL), an organization and community that combats suicide by empowering veterans, first responders, and their families through traditional and non-traditional therapies. He has appeared on James Gandolfini’s HBO special “Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq,” as well as “60 Minute Sports” and various other local and national mediums. Jake has been featured in roles in Clint Eastwood's productions’ of “American Sniper” and “The Mule”, and appeared in Bradley Cooper’s production of “A Star is Born”.

SCHOLARSHIP INFO

TMPA awards annual scholarships to the dependents of parents or legal guardians who are active TMPA members. Applications are accepted via electronic submission only (e-mail.) The application window opens on May 1, and the deadline for applicant submissions is June 30. A committee appointed by the president at the annual TMPA Summer Conference will award scholarships.
